From historic trails to adventure trips, passing through an artistic experience and a fantastic nightlife, the "main attractions" in Bogotá have everything you need to deeply know the Colombian beauty. A city of about seven million people, the Colombian capital shelters an active and diverse cultural life all the year round. It hosts concerts, music and theater festivals, international sports encounters, and food with the unforgettable Latin flavor can be found in numberless restaurants. Undoubtedly, a main attraction is La Candelaria, in Bogotá´s downtown. The city’s downtown area preserves its colonial architecture; in this particular neighborhood much of this type of constructions is still alive within their alleys and narrow streets. Moreover, walking around is possible to find symbolic and pictorial spots where popular art blossoms and hand made art craft can be seen. But, for more specific art work museums have become main attractions by themselves. The Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá, the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum), and a museum dedicated to one of the most significant Colombian painters, Fernando Botero, among others museums are located in downtown as well. |

Another main attraction in Bogotá is Cerro de Monserrate, one of the peaks overlooking the city. There are several ways to get to the top: a funicular railway or a cable car takes visitors to the sightseeing. However, a third manner is to walk emulating what hundred of people do when they climb in their pilgrimage to the chapel at the top. From there the Andean savannah shows its beauty and splendour in a mixture of green and yellow covered by a blue sky and thick clouds. Certainly, another main attraction that completes this trail in Bogotá is going to Quinta Bolívar near the bottom of the Cerro where part of the city’s origin history is displayed. Near Bogotá, spread out in the savannah, travellers will find charming towns that have preserved their traditions in food, architecture and customs. Villa de Leyva is a beautiful town declared Architectural National Monument for its churches, cobble stones streets, and convents. Another charming town is Zipaquirá where the famous Salt Cathedral is visited by people from all over the world because of its architectural achievement and beautiful details craved out from the salt walls of the mine. Less than 2 hours drive lies fragrant coffee plantations filled with one of the most delicious coffees in the world. For those who love extreme sports or adventure tourism, locations like Sutatausa or Machetá will not let you down; beyond the excitement beautiful landscapes fulfil all of your expectancies. |
