Chin surgery (mentoplasty) is a treatment for changing the shape, size or position of the Chin. There are patients with a little developed Chin, or with a too developed Chin (prognathism). Dimensions must be evaluated both vertically and horizontally. Doctors must also consider the rest of the jaw, teeth positions, maxillary, forehead, etc…

An augmentation of a chin that requires just a few centimeters correction can be carried out like this:

|

Implanting a chin prothesis, which can consist on different materials like solid silicone,  Goretex, or

others.  Implants must be introduced through an incision inside the mouth, in the furrow between the upper lip and the gum (intra-oral), or through a little incision in the skin under the chin, (external), similar to the one that is used in neck lifting. Placement of the prothesis requires a local anesthesia and patients can go home immediately after surgery. There can be in a very few occasions temporary disorders of sensitivity and mobility in lips.

|
Advancement  of  a  portion  of  jaw  bone,  by  horizontal  cuts,  sections of bone moving forward a

portion of the mandible bone, by sectioning the bone (horizontal osteotomies), also using the intra-oral way. The flange of the bone is shifted and permanently located in a precise and accurate way, correcting previous defects, and making possible, if necessary, the shortening of a too long face.

|
Infiltrating fat tissue of the patient himself, by a liposculpture, with permanent results.
|
When  the  enlargement  of  a  chin  requires  a big correction, treatment consists on sectioning the

bone (vertical osteotomies). When pre-surgery evaluations show a wrong teeth occlusion, that makes advisable to move forward the inferior dental arch, it is necessary to move forward the mandible, and a treatment by an orthodontist afterwards.

Treatment of a too long chin (prognathism) requires a sanding or a bone sectioning (osteotomy), through an incision inside the mouth. Osteotomies make possible to move forward, to shorten or narrow the mandible. It is important to identify possible asymmetries or differences in shape or size, between both sides of the face. Surgeries can be performed with general anesthesia or with local anesthesia plus sedatives. After surgery, patients stay at the hospital for a few hours or for a night, in case of checking in a hospital. When sections of the mandible bone are practiced, longer stays at the hospital may be necessary. It is not indicated a postoperative massage, because it could move implants to a wrong position. After surgery, the mandible zone must be immobilized with a sticking plaster, which is removed after a few days.
