Is it something bigger than a gripe or allergy? Acute sinusitis, due to bacteria, is an infection of sinus cavities. It is usually preceded by colds or allergy attacks. In normal conditions, mucus that is gathered at the paranasal sinuses is drained toward nose passages. After colds or allergies, sinuses usually get inflamed, and stop draining. This leads to more congestion and infection.

Acute sinusitis diagnosis is usually based on a physical exam and evaluation of symptoms described by the patient, together with radiographies. |

Is it a sinusitis? Its symptoms are frequently confused with those of gripes or allergies. For this reason, many people don’t see any need to consult with an otorhinolaryngologist; they make a big mistake: Self-prescribing medications, buying drugs that do not require a prescription, such as antihistaminic drugs or common cold drugs. SINUSITIS TREATMENT Sinusitis that is caused by bacteria always requires an specific antibiotic, chosen by the doctor. If you suffer from three or more sinusitis symptoms, make sure you consult to an otorhinolaryngologist, to find a correct diagnosis and get adequate prescriptions. Medications should be taken for as long as doctors prescribe them, no matter any initial relief from all symptoms. In many cases, antibiotic treatment is not enough. It is necessary to prescribe an oral and/or nasal medication to remove congestion. Nasal irrigation, using physiological serum, that is widely available in the market, has proved to be very useful for hydrating the mucosa and activating the flow of secretions. In which cases is an endoscopic surgery prescribed? In cases of chronic sinusitis. It means frequent sinusitis attacks, or sinusitis that lasts for three or more months. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis are usually less severe than those of acute sinusitis. However, chronic sinusitis may produce some irreversible changes, that make necessary a surgical procedure, to generally remove physical obstructions that aggravate and perpetuate the problem, or fungus that don’t respond to traditional treatments. Endoscopic surgery is an almost non-invasive surgery of paranasal sinuses. It has become a very common procedure, replacing most of the times conventional surgeries. Endoscopic surgery of paranasal sinuses provides excellent clinical results in treating sinusitis, proved in millions of cases around the world. |
